• We are not the teachers; we are the helpers!
  • Parents are the first teachers.
  • We teach through immersion method(which means only avre vatto spoken in class)
  • Comforting the children makes them feel at ease to be in the class.
  • Use the term “avre vatto’ all the time.(NOT ‘avre jaath or sourashtra)
  • Make sure everyone is addressing others with politeness( Avo bei, bisuvo ammA, khavo mami/mama, aav mai/babu) persistently reminding them.
  • Find out the city (India) they are from and accept the dialect and do not change it. Let other students also know there are a few different ways.
  • Follow the routine, (individually greet each student as soon as they come to the class and dismiss one student  at a time at the end)
  • Talk slowly and clearly, listen to the pronunciation of the students.
  • Engage all the students, give equal opportunity to all of them during the class time.
  • Always encourage the children and use positive words.  Praise goes long ways.  Address them as Mai and Babu and with any words of endearment.
  • Keep the class lively😊.  Making it interesting.
  • At any point if you feel the children are getting restless or distracted then change the topic or play a game or sing a song.(small children will love to jump and stretch).
  • Come with a prepared lesson plan for each week, at the same time be ready to change it according to the children’s mood.
  • Do not overload with a lot of information.  Recap or review at the end of the class what they learnt new.
  • Feel free to use the materials from our polTAm site as much as possible. https://polltam.sourashtraassociation.org/course/view.php?id=4.  Rare words are given in memrise also.
Use any nice moral stories of Indian background with 90% of avre vattA words. Then ask simple questions, like what is the girl’s name or where did they go? (Make sure they are using a full sentence)
  • Encourage the children/parents to check out the games in memrise. (https://app.memrise.com/course/sourashtra/)
  • Do not hesitate to contact the right person for any kind of help. (Principal, admin or fellow teachers).  They are willing to share their experience.
  • Build a good relationship with the parents and keep in touch through WhatsApp in your class.
  • Never cancel any class on very short notice.
  •   We are functioning under the language committee of Sourashtra Association. Always post in slack all of the changes and problems.
